Functions of thermostat:

A thermostat automatically adjusts the volume of water flowing into a radiator depending on temperature of cooling water. By altering water circulation paths, it changes the heat dissipation effect of the colling system, and maintains a suitable working temperature range for the engine. The thermostat must be technically sound, otherwise the normal function of the engine will be severely impaired. If the main valve of the thermostat opens too late, the engine will experience overheat. If this valve opens too early, the engine prewarming time will be extended, leading to lower-than-normal engine temperature.

Fault symptoms of thermostat:

After the engine is cold started in normal cases, it works at a low temperature. In order to increase the temperature rapidly, the thermostat is used for control (with the main valve of the thermostat closed), causing the cooling liquid to be directed to the water distribution pipe via the liquid pump. Since the liquid does not pass the radiator, the cooling system works in a small circulation mode. When the temperature of the cooling liquid reaches 87℃ (the thermostat activation temperature is 87℃ on both Bora and Golf models), the thermostat valve will open, allowing the cooling liquid to flow through the radiator. The cooling system then works in a large circulation mode. Typically, about five minutes after cold start of a car, the cooling liquid can reach the normal working temperature range between 85 and 105℃. If it fails to reach this range after a long moment, or if the temperature rises rapidly to over 110℃, the possibility of a thermostat failure should be considered.
