A VW shock absorber should be preferably replaced after use for 6 years or 100,000 km. If you are used to driving roughly or often pass bumpy roads, such replacement interval should be shortened, e.g. to five years or 80,000 km. If your car is a light one primarily for family daily use, the interval can be extended appropriately.

Shock absorber is an important component for safe driving of a car. It is mainly intended to restrain shock due to rebound of an energy-absorbing spring, and also absorbs impact energy from road surface. A damaged shock absorber can have a direct bearing on driving safety and riding comfort, and may even cause excessive wear of other parts.

It should be noted that the shock absorbers on a car need to be replaced in pairs, otherwise the resulting unbalance of force and damping effect may expose the shock absorbers to higher risks of failure. In typical cases, if oil leakage is found on a shock absorber, it is problematic, and requires timely replacement or repair.
